For my first Fellowship Friday, I have to brag about my friend Amanda. Tonight, she was in her first show with the Upright Citizens Brigade! And she was great!
Lets take a minute to talk about budget friendly entertainment in NYC. The comedy shows at the UCB are between $5-$10. They are honestly so fun and super entertaining. A great, inexpensive idea for when you're hosting a friend from our of town or even looking for a cheap date night idea.
There are two UCB locations here in the city-- Chelsea and the East Village-- both feature sketch and improv shows.
I plug this now, because I am currently a student with them and will probably try to sell you tickets later ;)
Student or not, I mean what I said!
Anyway--- back to Amanda... I guess...
When she invited me to the show I was more than happy to make a night of it! Comedy, friends, booze... the trifecta!
In addition to myself, Amanda had also invited Robert and our friend and former roommate from college, Emily.
Emily is suuuuuper talented and fresh off the "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" tour. AND, she is also FUNemployed! It is nice not to be the only one.
It was such a beautiful day, so we had decided to meet in the park by the theatre. I forgot how much I loved people watching.
... especially in NYC...
But the real show to watch in the park was coming from one of our own! It wasn't long before Amanda started getting some pre-show butterflies.
She was really scared. It was HILARIOUS.
I knew immediately what would calm her nerves. Tequila.
And I was right! As expected, the alcohol was really working. Unfortunately, Amanda is not allowed to drink before the shows-- so she still felt nervous. But with each sip, I felt way better about it.
Now, being FUNemployed, I have cut back on drinking A LOT. It is such an easy way to save money. However, the happy hour special at the mexican restaurant was great. For $10 I was really ready to laugh.
Amanda had to head to the theatre early, so Emily, Robert, and I finished our drinks and went to pick up our tickets. Being the good friends we are, we decided that no matter what, we would be as supportive as possible-- and laugh even if we didn't think she was funny.
This took practice:
As expected though, the show was awesome! Everyone did such a great job-- even Amanda. I know! I'm surprised too!
We had decided to stay and see the show that started after Amanda's, BUCKY: HERE AND NOW. It is a long form improv show performed by a UCB house team-- made up of really accomplished performers and writers (including a cast member from SNL)-- and we laughed so hard. Those peeps was funny.
So lets itemize the night:
$10 bar tab + $15 for two UCB shows + a hilarious night out with friends and Amanda= $25
Not too bad for a friday night out in NYC!
Not bad at all.
Well friends, as always, I thank you for stopping by!
See you at the next post :)
Enjoy your weekend!
